quick note – my caps lock key on my laptop appears to have broken, so excuse the poor grammar!!
right good, now that’s done and said i can stop whacking the keyboard so hard trying to make it work 😛
last night – my pretty smoothie cereal blend got a quick yogurt/cereal dust- make over before i ate it:
and while i was at the cinema, seeing grown ups, i ate a clif builder’s bar, from my gabriela swag:
loved it! filling and dense and delicious and very good – unlike grown ups…it was ok, but just ok. a few funny jokes, but quite a few ones that fell on deaf ears too…i can imagine it’ll be for sale at £2 soon after the dvd release!
when i got home, i was craving carbs – although i wasn’t strictly hungry – so i had a small (30g ish) bowl of cereal with a splash of milk (apparently, after over a decade of gagging at the mere smell of milk and cereal, i can now just about stomach it!).
oh – and the little (2009!!) christmas present my friend got me when she was in germany last year:
so cute! ich liebe dich aussi, lucy!!
——–
today – sports nutritionist appointment day!! more on that later – first i had to pump out a 7mile run. which i didn’t. :p
i woke up and it was poooouuurrring with rain, like really heavy, torrential, flooding-the-stables type rain. so i decided to take a rain check on the run and do it tomorrow. instead, i did about 1hour of home workout dvds, so at least i’d done something 🙂 before i commenced said workout, i had an apple and 2tsps of wheatgerm.
breakfast was a proper epic green monster, with a few strawberries thrown in for good measure:
only after i’d spent a lifetime and half photographing it, did i remember i had a sack full of fresh blackberries waiting….
….much better 😛
theeen it was time for my appointment! i think my poor little car almost died in a very deep flood on the way there, but we did eventually make it in one piece 😀 and i gotta say – i love my sports nutritionist! not only has she got horses, she’s also run a handful of marathons and done an ironman triathlon! you know the ones – where the running part is an actual full length marathon!? yeah. mad! i knew we would get along after that 😛
sooo here’s what she said:
- basically, i’m extremely healthy! i am very very slim yes – but she said it’s not in the least bit a problem, as she could see just by looking at me that i was very healthy – thick shiny hair, bright eyes, healthy skin etc etc.
- she said my calorie intake – compared to what someone like me should be eating – was as close to the recommended daily allowance as she had ever seen! proof that you can eat right if you listen to your body!
- she was very impressed that i don’t drink alcohol – she herself doesn’t drink, and she described it as a ‘poison’ (which i agree with). it was nice to hear someone praise my tee-totalness for once, instead of being greeted with shock!
- she recommended i drink before meals, not during – if you drink too much water with a meal, it can dilute the gastric juices, thus interfering with the digestive process. a glass 1/2hr to an hour before a meal was her recommendation.
- the words ‘totally brilliant’ came up more than once 😛
- she suggested i have maybe a few more carbs before my morning workout – so maybe switch the apple for some more rice cakes or a banana, which seems fair play.
- she was highly impressed with the amount of fats i eat 😀
- she was 100% cool with the vegan thing
- she loves clif bars too! her favourite flavour is my favourite 😛
- she told me that during my marathon i should wear my name on my running top – then people will call out ‘goooo freeyyyaaa’!’ or whatever, which no doubt will be very uplifting!!
that’s all the good stuff (well, all that i can remember without the official notes to hand). the vitamins i was low on:
- iodine – very simple to combat. a few sheets of nori or seaweed a week and i’ll be fine 🙂
- selenium – all i need to eat is one (yes, just one is sufficient for me!) brazil nut a day and that’s covered too!
- b vitamins – *sigh*. of course i am…good ol’ veganism! she recommended a b-vitamin pill, which is totally vegan of course
- i have a slightly higher ratio of sugary carbs to starchy carbs, but that was fine, considering how *perfect* my diet is otherwise 😀 just omitting the occasional teaspoon of agave would be ok 😀
- aaannd finally, she was talking about salt/electrolytes running (cos it can cause achey legs). she had a few suggestions, but the only one i remember at the moment (she’s emailing me the notes) is nunn pills <- like electrolyte pills that you dissolve in water. tres clever!
other random stuff:
b-vitamins play a heavy roll in energy and..ok, i really can’t remember it exactly now, but in other words, there would be a definite link between my achey legs/occasional energy running problems, and low b-vitamins. yay!! i’ll know more when i get her email.
check out how my chart (bottom), showing the proportions of fat, carbs, protein etc matches the recommended one (top – alcohol is bright yellow, carbs are blue):
what a nerd i am 😛
she also gave me lots of recipes and a huge thick printout thing with all my stats and other info in:
love it!
all in all – it was a super appointment! i’m going to have a follow up one with her in later September, after i’ve had a while using the b-vits, and we’re also going to talk marathon day strategies 😀
also – if you’ve never seen a nutritionist, sport or otherwise, i recommend you do – it’s so helpful!! if anyone has any questions or wants more detail (there’s lots i didn’t write here), feel free to email me 🙂

in other news!
1) after a 2+ month disappearing act, obama made a reappearance:
she was fat, hungry (2 servings of cat biscuits and a serving of meat have already been consumed), wet, and very very talkative (new addition number one)!
2) my toy snow leopard arrived!!!
i got it as a present for sponsoring a snow leopard for the wwf charity 🙂 (new addition number two!) not sure if the cats really cared for it though….
…oh! randomly – i went outside to go and wave at chika, and carter was all curled up asleep on her back!!! lolza!
lunch today – a lovely mix of teriyaki veggies – swede, parsnip, squash, celeriac, garlic:
along with some of this:
which i was madly craving, mixed with this:
vanilla-almond vega smoothie mix from the healthy living summit! despite the somewhat alarming green colour, it’s delicious 😀
tastes just like marzipan! love.
oh, and i ate some selenium a brazil nut. better to start as i mean to go on!
other activities of the day…a dog walk in the pouring heavy rain, where i got extremely wet feet, horse activities, lunch making for tomorrow and…er…that’s about it! the sports appointment took aagggess so i kinda ran out of time!
and now i’m gonna go think of something to make for dinner..hurrumph. could be difficult!
question: have you ever seen a nutritionist?
what’s your favourite thing to do on a rainy day? be warm – that’s it for me!!
You are the only one I have seen so far that got the vanilla almond vega flavor in their swag bag! I got the tropical flavored one, and it’s a bit too sweet for me. Your cats are SO cute!
aah i got the chocolate one too – i bought the vanilla almond one from wholefoods cos it was on special offer and you can’t get them in the uk 😛 i tried the tropical one too – horrible!
Wow! I love how you decorated your green monster with all your toppings! It’s almost too pretty to eat!
hehe my thoughts every morning 😛
I have seen a nutritionist, but that was for my ED, so I haven’t seen one since and I don’t think she was very good
i definetly recommend finding another one – i saw one for my e.d as well (back in the day!) and hated her, so don’t write them off yet 🙂
Oh wow, the nutritionist sounds like she is really good at her job! I have only ever seen dietitians (is there a difference?) for my ED and they have been crap to put it bluntly. They treated me like a typical ‘anorexic’ who needs to gain weight by eating JUNK like chocolate and sponge and custard and biscuits. So I haven’t had a good experience with them. I would be really interested if you could recommend anyone, even this nutritionist although I understand she is a sports nutritionist…who I could maybe just even email if they are too far away? I have been dying to see someone who will just listen to what I like and work with me like your nutritionist did! She sounds perfect – happy with your veganism (which is totally rare with these people!) and a lover of Clif bars too! WOOH! How did she do the pie chart things, they are fascinating, I’d love to get one for me!
Yay for Obama coming back!! All of your cats are adorable 🙂
On rainy days like today I love reading all my trashy mags hehe and baking to fill the house with warmth whilst it’s cold and nasty outside!
arggh, my e.d nutritionist/dietician (there is a difference i think, but no idea what!) was just the same; she once told me off for eating vegetables!
recommendations..i don’t know of any other than this one i saw (who is in suffolk), but you could try googling people in your area? the one i saw also does nutritional therapy, so she could well be useful! if you want her details you can email me 🙂 finding a good one is well worth it though, so shop around 🙂
How cool!!! Sounds like your meeting with your nutritionist went great! I want to go to one, lol. Wild that she’s an iron-manner!
they’re so worth it!!
haha i know, i proper gasped when she told me!
Really interesting hearing about your nutritionist appointment.
Glad Obama is back and the snow leopard toy looks cute. 🙂
Hope you have a great evening!
thank you sweetie, you too!
Sounds like you had a very informative appointment with the sports nutritionist. I’m not surprised she thought you had a near perfect diet – you eat really well!!
awh thank you!
Thanks so much for sharing your experience with the sports nutritionist…to be honest, the results don’t suprise me. When you said you were going to be seeing one I wondered why ~ your diet is amazingly healthy anyway! But it must be nice to have confirmed how perfect your eating habits are 😀 I didn’t realise you weren’t taking a B12 supplement! Vegans really need one as B12 definiency is really nasty. I wish I could see this lady…she sounds awesome! I have seen one private dietician and would never go back…I won’t repeat her recommendations but they were frankly dangerous and could send someone down the path to anorexia if followed to the letter. This was what worried me for you, but I’m so glad your experience was a positive one!
And I ADORE that snow leopard.
I’ve always wanted to try that flavour of Builders Bar…you’re so lucky with that package exchange! I wish I had a US bloggie friend (blend hehe) like Gabriella!
*hugs*
~Jess~
xxxxxxxx
i actually saw one because my mum – being a little worrier :p – wanter confirmation that after my e.d past, and the veganism, and the running, that i was going to be ok. it was kinda like a final nail in the e.d coffin! so she’s super happy now too 🙂
i’m sorry you had a rough experience with one 😦 i think it’s worht shopping around to find a good one though – when you find them, they’re so worth it!
xxx
Never been to a nutritionist but I’m SURE it could do me a lotta good! sounds like some interesting intel coming from her…. now I’m worried about my b vitamin intake…. I’m sure it’s tragically low due to diet and I really SHOULD do something about that. :-\
Iron Man people impress the heck outta me!
Rainy day = yes, WARMTH, plus book or good movie.
are you vegan? you could always take a b supplement if you’re worried 🙂 or go see a nutritionist and find out once and for all 😛
Have you tried holding down the shift key to get capital letter? That works too 🙂
I have only ever been to a dietician and because it was for me to gain weight, she wanted me to pretty much eat junk. What if I got used to eating junk food and couldn’t stop myself? GEEEZ smart thinking! Yeah…I never went back. I’m gaining weight by eating lots of healthy foods and I certainly don’t deprive myself of almond butter, chocolate and soy ice cream hehe.
I’m so glad that your appointment went well!
On a rainy day, I love to get my bake on haha. I love baking muffins and brownies and cookies and…(you get the picture 😉 )
I saw your tweet about booking your flight to Washington DC for your marathon!! YAAAAY that must be so exciting 😀
yep that’s exactly what my e.d dietician said to me too! there seems to be a theme emerging with them…..good on you for doing it the right way 🙂
ahh shift key eh? let’s see…I Can Write In Capitals Again!!! THANKYOU!!!!
Congrats on your positive feedback! I had my first nutritionist appointment this week and it was really great! I have a lot of stuff to work on, but she is SO nice and really tailors her suggestions to foods I like! I was REALLY surprised to hear what my caloric intake SHOULD be though…it was very high compared to stuff I read in magazines and compared to some of the intakes some health bloggers eat. Just goes to show you that everyone is different and has different needs! 😀
NEVER listen to what the magazines say! They always bang on about 1200, which is totally 100% wrong!
And with food bloggers, I reckon unless they actually count the calories, you can never tell..i always think KERF doesn’t have many cos her meals are so small, BUT she uses quality stuff – nut buttes, oils etc, so she does actually get the right amount 🙂
I’m so glad your appointment went well though!
the meeting with the nutritionist sounds like it went so great. congrats on all your hard work paying off 😉 she sounds like such an admirable person, too! i’ve never met with a nutritionist but would be very interested to 🙂 i can’t wait to start my intro to nutrition class. i’ll be doing some analyzing of my diet, i bet!
everything else looks loovely, as always! that must be adorable to see chika and carter all lovey-dovey.
my rainy day activity? definitely baking!!
Oooh you should – I bet they’d give you a glowing report!!
Your sports nutritionist sounds AWESOME! That is so great! And I love the german cookie 🙂
Haha yes, I wondered if anyone would notice it!
So glad to hear your nutritionist appointment went so well – sounds like you are doing great !!!! Would love to hear some of her recipes!!!
My favorite thing to do on a rainy day is sit with a nice cup of tea and read !!!
Have a great Friday – aimee
I’ll make it known when I make one of hers 🙂
You healthy girl, loved all that info! & boo-ya to all those people that say vegan/vegetarian diets are unhealthy and everyone turns anemic from them! B supplement seems like a fine idea. I eat yogurt every other day or so, and chicken on Fridays (haha – organized nerd?) jus’ so my body can continue to recognize the animal produx ~ so when I head down to my beloved Mexico, I can eat a taco and not drop dead or come down with a stomach attack.
Hmph…
You always make me craave thick, green monsters with cereal blended in ’em and fruits on top. Always. & roasted veggies, too. You’re inspiring :]
Awh – and you’re really sweet for saying so!! I appreciate it 🙂
What a great trip to the nutritionist! I think that you did a good thing going there especially while training for a marathon. It just ensures you are getting all the nutrients you need! Awesome!
My thoughts exactly 🙂 marathon training isn’t something to take lightly IMHO!
Wow, a great review from the nutritionist, i sppose being an athlete, that kind of thing is important. Ive been doing a nutritionist before and it was great to see wht vitamins and miinerals and foods i was low on or having too much of. Rectifying my sugar, zinc , protein and iron imbalance really improoved my mood and overall general wellbeing and energy. The smmothie looks soo good, I love marzipan, ;D
I think what an athlete eats is one of the most important things to look at – after all, if you put petrol in a diesal engine, the car would break..we’re no different!
Hey well done you model student!
I have read before about putting your name on your race number and I think I will do that from now on- I have had people saying “go number 643” or whatever (and I do know my number) but I reckon the name thing will be much better.
Also I dont drink alcohol too- snap! I just dont like it, and I dont see the need for it. But people are always very surprised when they find out- they are normally more intregued by that than by me being a veggie!
Maria 🙂
It’s silly isn’t it – no alchol has so much stigma attatched to it! And I really do see it as poison..I hate the taste too!
Good on you 🙂
First of all: congratulation on your healthy life style – i am so glad your apptment went so well!
I have one question about the electrolytes and aching legs:
It means the legs are achey after the run? And where can you get the electrolytes from (apart from a an electrolyte drink ;-))
Have a nice weekend!
No I get achey legs sometimes whilst running – nothing after 🙂 electrolyte wise – food, coconut water, sports drinks, salty stuff… it’s just a case of getting in more salt and minerals really (I think, I’m no expert!)
I’m glad your appointment went well!! It sounds like you’re definitely on a great track. I consulted with the nutritionist I interned for at the beginning of the summer, and while she didn’t give me many specific pointers, she did say that my size is acceptable and that veganism is totally okay!! It’s always nice to have a medical professional reassure you you’re doing the right thing 🙂
Glad you liked the Builder bar!! They’re my favorite- SO tasty and filling!!
Goshyes, I hate people who just assume veganism is bad!!
Haha, I can’t thankyou enough for the Builder’s bar – I love them!!
wow sounds like a very productive appointment! you must be really please with all the praise! your doing it all right! good for you! so young and so healthy! what a fantastic situation to be in! and wholeheartedly worth the effort – you have a long and healthy life ahead of you girl! x
That’s the hope!!
I love those Clif builder’s bars- wish you could buy them here in the UK : ( My fave flavour is the peanut butter one I think… Hmm might have to treat myself and get some shipped over from America… ; )
Oh and if you’re into Marmite that is a fabby source of B vitamins! : )
Blech no, I hate marmite!! I’ve tried it many times (for the B vits) but…just no!!
I’m glad your appointment went well, sounds like you got some good info! I saw a dietician when I had an ED, which was helpful but I actually hated going because I always had to be weighed.
I’m glad your cat came back! 🙂
Oh yeah, the weighing was the worst bit with my Ed nutritionist too 😦 it makes you feel like an object!
I would love to see a nutritionist – it would be really interesting and so helpful. I always make sure I have my two brazil nuts a day! 😀
Last year, after being being diagnosed with food allergies (or intolerances) to dairy and gluten, my doctor suggested I visit a nutritionist since my university provides me one for free.
The nutritionist I visited was not very helpful. She was not familiar with my restricted diet.
That visit to the nutritionist propelled me to seek out other people who choose to eat healthy and have restricted diets.
That is how I found the food blogger world! And I am so glad I did!
Now I am feeling healthy and more creative with my food than ever before. Food bloggers have really made food easy and fun again since my diagnosis.
That’s so interesting, what the nutritionist said! I’ve seen one, a few times actually, but never heard that *really, considered* that about the water, makes total sense though! I’ve been meaning to start drinking water before/after meals more instead of during… interesting though that it can actually interfere with digestion!
Amazing spot-on that you were so close to the recommendations! Way to go! 😀 It’s great to find a nutritionist that works for you!
[…] Old-fashioned oats made with Raspberry Zinger tea, mixed with cinnamon, chia seeds, and flaxseed meal, and topped with Grape Nuts, PB&Co. CRS, raspberry preserves (finally the last of it!), and almonds. You getting sick of me eating this combination yet? Mmm, green mug. I love the cool colors (greens, blues, purples) so much more than the warm colors (reds, oranges, yellows). So much more peaceful. I also enjoyed a Brazil Nut (for the selenium!) […]
