Guten Abend/Afternoon my lovely readers
All having a wonderful weekend? I’ve had a tiiiirrring one!! I was gonna run 10miles today…but I ended up running the scheduled 13miles, like the badass runner I am :p But more on that later. Saturday first!
Saturday:
I managed to drag my mum out this morning for a 35minute power walk with me (running day off) which was swell
Walking with a book is good; walking with my mum is great! We covered just over 2miles
Before I left, I had 2 tsps of wheatgerm, but by the time I got back, I was mooorree than ready for an EGM
I was different today though – I cut down from my normal 1.5 bananas, to just half – and replaced the missing banana with some little plums (making good use of the huuuuge amounts we have growing in the garden). The result was pretty little purple specks amongst the green:
Gorjuz
Toppings were as per usual along with more plums:
It was a mighty fine and thick beast. (Random side note – do you often make smoothies without banana? I’m scared to without! Banana adds SO much thickness and flavour and creaminess and sweetness..I think I need to branch out :p)
Straight after breakfast, I went into town to have a word with my new work and to pick up some essentials (tempeh and yogurt, to be precise). While I was there, I passed by a little local grocers…and check it out!
YES! A kabocha squash!! I ended up buying FOUR of them, along with a massive yellow-y pumpkin type thing, and this guy:
Gross right? NO idea what sort it is..anyway, the squashes were all local and for sale at 99p per kg, which is a complete BARGAIN. I was a happy camper!
When I got back home, I basically turned round and went back out again, cos we went for lunch for my Grandpa’s birthday (I had an ‘issue’ with this – Monday’s post maybe?). The restaurant was lovely – but there weren’t many vegan choices (aka none!), as is the case where I live -
I ended up having a piece of bread to start, which was DELICIOUS:
Verrry soft, warm and doughy
And then the tomato, orange and fennel salad, with no dressing (it wasn’t vegan):
The little truffle potatoes were great! I also asked for some veggies on the side – imagine my sheer JOY when I got presented with a big old parsnip:
Again, I was a happy camper
For dessert, they made me a little fresh fruit salad:
Tasty
Despite the 40min wait for the meal, it was delicious
Mine was somewhat light on the..well, everything!…but was really good
And they even gave my Grandpa a candle in his dessert:
SO sweet! And just for the record, here’s my mum and Grandpa (he’s 89!):
And Hannah and my gran:
(Fun Farm Fact of the Day – I call my Grandpa ‘Grampy’<- I think my sister and I misunderstood the word when we first heard ‘grandpa’ so that’s what he ended up as!)
By the time I got home (at 4pm) I felt I should eat a bit more fuel, so I had some cereal and yogurt:
And a bit later on, a cracker.
Dinner – lentil stew baby :p Lentils, toasted and then cooked with chopped tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, water (which I parboiled parsnips in), salt, 1tsp cocoa powder & rosemary/garlic:
.,..and lots of parsnip (1/2 was boiled, 1/2 roasted to test..), KABOCHA (!!) and broccoli:
Simple and delicious
Later on (ie after X Factor :p) I had a Trek bar for some carb loading fuel
———-
Sunday:
LOONNGGG run day. In fact, I did my fifth 13miler! 2 in training, 2 in competition, plus today’s one. And you know what?
I WAS A BEAST!!!
It went REALLY really well! As in, no-aches-could’ve-done-5-more-miles kinda well. And I enjoyed it and the time flew by, and for the first time since I started marathon training, I felt like I could really rock it!! YYYAYAAAAAYYAYAYAYAY!!!!
Pre-run – 2 tsps wheatgerm, 1 rice cake and a new flavah Clif bar:
LOVED it. My favourite flavour!
While I was running I added 330ml coconut water to the Camelbak:
(Still foul, still hate it). During the run, I ate these (which actually have the non-vegan beeswax – something I didn’t realise til AFTER I’d eaten them!):
At mile 8. My splits:
- 8.31
- 8.48
- 8.31
- 8.41
- 8.26
- 8.19 (WOOP WOOP!)
- 8.43
- 8.58 <- I did walk/sprints whilst eating the sports beans
- 8.46
- 8.44
- 8.17 (WOOP WOOP!) <- the mile after I met my mum for a water top up. LOVE HER!
- 8.54
- 8.47
- 0.1miles – 48 seconds.
TOTAL: 1hr53mins:
I met my mum at mile 10 so she could give me some more water. Well, that was the plan – she passed me at mile 9 on her way and stopped. I shook my head and kept on going, cos I wanted to stop at mile 10, so she drove back past. At mile 10 (where I thought we were going to meet), she wasn’t there! I had been looking forward to it SO much – I actually crouched down and cried my eyes out for 3mins, cos I thought she’d gone home!! When I started running again, my legs hurt
As it turns out, she’d stopped just 1/2 a mile away (where she thought we were meant to meet) – oops! I was SO relieved to see her (running seems to bring out emotions…)
I actually almost cried again :p Anyway, we chatted for a few mins while I re-filled my water, and then set off home. Weirdly, all the aches I’d just had totally vanished after that…I saw her again when I’d done my 13.1, and we walked the last mile home together
I love my mum! And the post-13.1mile glow:
Ninja-style, a la Caitlin
Lol
Breakfast was – obviously – a huge old Epic Green Monster, with all the usual suspects – 1c. cereal blended with milk, yogurt, 1tbsp flaxseed, vanilla extract, spinach, a tiny pear, frozen banana, and topped with dates, granola, homemade jam and the ends of my Fru-Grains!
I don’t think I can refer to it as tree bark, looking at that picture
It went down a treat
Afterwards, I went for a short walk to stretch my legs and pick some blackberries <- I ate WAY too many and felt so sick after!! Nothing a good gallop on the stubble won’t solve though :p I made my mum take some pics, which I’ll show y’all on Horsey Humpday
As per usual, my appetite packed its’ bags and left – but made a rapid turnaround at about 2.45pm thank goodness
sOOO I had – a wholemeal English muffin, half with white chocolate dreams PB, 1/2 with cinnamon raisin swirl PB:
As well as roasted parsnip, squash and broccoli, baked with seasoning and balsamic vinegar, and 2 of these:
Simple ingredients..But I wasn’t hugely impressed. Good meal though!
I finished off lunch with some So Crispy bites and a small apple – apparently once one’s appetite after an awesome long run kicks in, it means business!!
Riittio, that’s the end – this is already a super long post so I’ll save whatever I eat later til tomorrow
Hope you’re all having a good day!
PS – LOL – it seems every single one of you who commented on my last post eats breakfast whilst blog reading! Love it
PPS – Does anyone know of any bloggers who do really good headers? I need a new one quite badly…..let me know!
PPPS – If you’re a runner, or anyone who does hard sport, do you find you’re extra emotional during a tough workout?

I want to start cooking with cocoa! How inspiring! The only savory cocoa item I was familiar with was mexican mole but now I am going to try it with all kinds of other dishes, thanks!
I think it adds a richness to flavours
I love that photo of you and grams.
Haha we’ve had a kabocha squash sitting on our counter for weeks. They sell them year round for super cheap at a few grocery stores here. I associate them with winter food though.
Great job on the run, Freya! I wish we had known each other when I was studying abroad in Londontown.
Year round? Oh you are so spoilt!
Yeah it seems so weird that you were in London all that time and I had no idea of your existence!! Maybe you should come back
Oh – that’s Hannah and my gran, not me
heh heh! i love that we all eat breakfast whilst catching up on bloggy news! how fab! i know now i have a boat load of breakfast dates every day!! love it!
Wonderful run babes, you did realllllly well!! go you you wee runner super star!!!! x
Oh that is the cutest comment ever, thank you!
I just did my longest run – 12 miles- I read your posts while stretching!
Yeah~ I felt excitement this morning and started a little bit too fast… glad I had ipod so I knew that and I slowed down. I was way tooo thirsty after 10 miles, I wish I had my mom giving me some liquid. You’re so lucky to have your family so supportive of your running
All your food look amazing!!! I really want to try your cocoa concoction for lunch ~~~
Waaay well done, 12miles is hardcore!! Do you have a Camelbak or anything? Maybe you could strategically place water bottles on your route, or carry a few notes to buy some water at a store?
Well done on your fifth half marathon!:)
I hate coconut water too. I prefer dulse for electrolytes (less food miles too). The clif bar made up for it though!
The other squash you have is called Turk’s Turban. I’m growing kabocha squash in my allotment:)
Ooh you know your squashes! Is it a good one?
I’ve never heard of dulse…what is it!?
I just order nathan running belt… I really feel the need of liquid now
Freya, you make a rocking ninja!!!
that squash/pumpkin thingy looks kerazeeey. i hope it tastes good! Now dont let this put you off, but….. there’s this mad old guy who walks past the shop i work at sometimes and he has this weird growth on his neck (i think its called a goyter?!?) it looks ALOT like that interesting little beastie that you’ve got there!!!
its not orange tho!
On a slightly less gross-out note! that clif bar looks scrum. your so lucky to have had the chance to go food shopping in america with a bunch of fellow foody bloggers, it must have been so much fun!
are you itching to go back!?!?
xxx
HAHA thanks for that! I don’t want to eat my weird growth/crazy squash now :p
Oh gosh I am DYING to go back – I would give anything to!
Well done on your run- so speedy!
Yes I do get a little emotional on long runs, especially on races near the finish line too.
I think I still dont always see myself as a runner, so when I actually complete something it makes the emotions bubble up- plus I am tired etc!
Love those squashes by the way!
If you’re not out walking, you’re a runner – that’s my view
No matter how fast or slow!
Well done Speedy McSpeedster
I don’t know how you run with a CamelBak though…it would drive me insane! I have enough trouble with my Garmin 205 rubbing on my wrist…taken to wearing one long glove, Michael Jackson style when I run to keep it in place. I am strange and don’t drink or eat at all when running (perhaps a few sips from drink stations during races) Very bad I know!
You wouldn’t like to lend me your legs would you? Actually, perhaps not, because they’re so long and I’m so jealous that I’d never give them back.
I found Kabocha in Waitrose yesterday as well. Was well chuffed. But sadly could only manage to carry two, what with the tray of Good Hemp milk I bought (get it if you see it~ it’s lovely!)
Dulse is a type of seaweed…never tried it though!
Long runs bring out my emotions, positive and negative. Never cried during a training run, but have shouted and cursed. Because of my bursitis, sometimes extreme pain comes on all of a sudden and then I have to really grit my teeth in order to get through. It’s frustrating more than anything else ~ the rest of me is raring to go but my darn right hip basically incapacitites me after a few miles on it when it’s deteriorating. I’m just hoping it doesn’t bugger up my dreams of marathon number two.
Ack! Sorry about the bad restaurant experience in terms of vegan options. Conventional restaurants are such a pain. I think you coped so well though and should be very proud of yourself
*hugs*
~Jess~
xxxxxxxx
You always leave such thoughtful comments – I really appreciate it!
Haha close up my legs are a state – covered in scratches from all the brambles I run past!!
I did my 1st two half marys without any food either..looking back I think it’s mad
food makes such a difference
I feel for your pain though – that must be horrible
YAY for kabocha1!! I MUST go to Waitrose soon and get some…xxx
I can’t wait to be able and run that many miles. So happy your Mom was there for water. Have you tried other brands of coconut water?
I’ve tried the only 2 brands England sells :p I just hate the aftertaste! I’ve even tried it flavoured and it was even worse :p BUT I think it makes a big difference, so I’m gonna keep at it!
I Know that Ashley at Edible Perspective does headers!
I almost started to cry during my 10 miler yesterday. Not sure why… it was a great run and I really enjoyed it.
I wonder if it’s a low blood sugar thing..I ALWAYS get emotional if I have low blood sugar.
You’re right, she does! Maybe I should contact her..hmm!
first off, i really miss you!!!!!
congrats on the run
You are amaaaazing.
Awh hun, I miss you too! And your groovy shades :p
That’s a turban squash! I’ve tried it before…it tasted like a normal squash but it sure was cool looking
Awesome job on the run!!
The crazy look will make up for any average or poor taste
dang girl, look at you bustin out that half mary no problem!! congrats, and i am very proud of you, and even happier that you are so proud of yourself! this will give you great confidence for race day
just let me know!
and if i put on a pouty face and stomp my foot, will you share chika pictures before wednesday, pretty pleassseee?! haha. i bet they are beautiful – i love galloping pictures.
as for having a GM without banana – it’s do-able, but bananas really do add such wonderful flavor and texture.
and if you’d like i can play with a header for you! i can’t say i’m wonderful at it – but i know my way around photoshop and if you let me know what you’re thinking i’ll play around with some versions for you
Haha I may well put the Chika ones up tomorrow, JUST for you :p Though I won’t say they’re incredible..I have only 3 or so whihc are presentable – my mum wasn’t wearing her glasses and so couldn’t see properly :p
Oohhh I would LOVE it if you played around with headers – that’d be amazing!! Maybe I should email you…:)
Oh, and big thankyou re the 13miles
Congrats on the epic run! And yes, I am also petrified of making a smoothie sans banana… I envision something soupy, tragic, and generally unpleasant (though I know that’s a little presumptuous of me without having actually tried it).
Don’t you just hate it when your only option at a restaurant is that kind of “bare bones” situation?! I’ve definitely encountered that, though not quite so severely as I’m not entirely vegan. (which I guess just means I’m not vegan, haha)
Emotional during a hard workout? Yes, if I get to that “zone”… it’s like you have to tap into a deeper internal space in order to press on, and that in turn gets you very much inside your head where both the good and the bad emotions lurk. And if I’m already in an emotional mood, I can dive right into a long run or difficult spin, like my mind’s already there and ready for it. Interesting!
Lol that is EXACTLY what I envision the banana-less smoothie to be like too!
The zone – I was definetly in it so i think you’re totally right there! You’re a wise lady
Wow! Congrats, apologies for not having commented lately! You post so often i could never catch up on everything i have probably missed but that is quite amazing that you seemed to have yourself a time in Chicago! And as for the 13-miler, all i can say is keep it up… and i wish i had someone to meet me at mile 10 for a water hit
You love your squash, kabocha is my fave but it looks like you have a Turk’s Turban. Odd, no? Tastes a FAIR amount better than it looks, trust.
Hello!! Wow long time-no see/read/comment! Are you still blogging?
Yeah Chicago was incredible..life changing! And thanks re the 13miles
9weeks til marathon!
Ahh Turk’s Turban – good name! Yeh I’d hope it would taste better than it looks :s
Ok I think I am going to comment as I read if that’s ok?
Love the German at the beginning of the post, and your restaraunt meal does look lovely (especially that bowl of vegetables with the parsnip). Sorry about there not being many vegan options though.
Your lentil stew looks great as well – do you have a recipe for it?
Congrats on running 13.1 miles, that is amazing! (Great ninja photo as well
).
Hope you have a fantastic Monday!
I don’t have a specific recipe as such..I just cooked! But I’ll do it again and make one
Wow a 1/2 marathon I am trying to work up to 4 miles at once. I will get there some day.
Its so nice to spend time with grandparents, especailly for their birthdays.
It looks like you had a great weekend, I hope your Monday and your new job is just a fun.
Also funny note, when I read that you “to have a word with my new work” I read it at first like you were going to go scold them for doing something wrong. I had to reread that sentence to make sure you weren’t yelling at your new job.
HA lol no – shouting at the new boss wouldn’t be a good idea! It was just to change days luckily
4miles is good!! You’ll get there for sure
Check out Iowa Girl Eats blog, she might have a good header.
Yes, I get emotional during long work outs but it leaves as fast as appeared (thank GOD!)
Lol yes, it’s good it’s just temporary!
AMAZING job on the run!!! I’m going to start my half training soon, and I LOVE runs like that…where you just feel like sprinting is easy. Great work!!
I hate when restaurants don’t have a lot of vegan options- it’s the reason I’m not “strictly” vegan. I found it was too easy for me to go back to restrictive ways when I ate out by not compensating for the small meal with a bigger snack. Such is life….if only every restaurant had vegan choices!! If you ever come to NYC I’m taking you to Candle 79. It will change your life
Hope you’re having a wonderful day!
It’s so freakin frustrating isn’t it!!?
Oohh…well I might be coming to NYC next summer! If anything plans out properly..I shall hold you to your promise
